GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE November, 1989

Women's festivals planned

Campfest will celebrate its seventh year in 1990 and Womongathering will be held for the third year. Both festivals are dedicated to presenting entertainment and workshops that represent a wide variety of topics and the broadest possible spectrum of women's performing arts.

Campfest and Womongathering invite women to witness and participate in the special empowerment that results from the energy generated in womenonly spaces.Campfest has openings for musicians, dance or theatre presentations, as well as workshop presenters. Audition tapes or workshop outlines will be accepted for this festival based on the quality of the work or performance, the amount of woman-identified and lesbian-feminist content of the work, the contribution of the performance or workshop to cultural diversity; and the level of interest that we feel the work will generate within the Campfest audience. Applications:

Performers: Send an audition tape. Audio tapes are fine but video tapes are preferred when possible. Whatever form you choose, the material should be representative of the material you would perform at the festival. You should also include a brief biography, a resume of your experience, some press clippings, if available, and a current photo.

Workshop Presenters: Send an outline or description of your proposed presentation. Please include a brief biography of your background and experience. Deadline for Performer and Presenter materials to be considered for the 1990 festivals is Oct. 30, 1989. All materials should be sent to: Carol Kerr, Director, Entertainment, Campfest, Rt #1 Box 91, Penn Run, PA 15765-9731. Telephone queries are welcome at 412463-1318.

At Womongathering our emphasis is on intensive, experimental workshops and music that reflect and contribute to the wide range of beliefs known as women's spirituality. It is important to the festival that all of the workshops and music presented be womon focused and women affirming. It should also be representative of a broad range of cultural belief systems. This festival is based in the belief that, "The time has come to breathe life into dreams-to move from possibility to actuality. The time has come to own our own power." Workshop presenters are selected to contribute to these principles. Applications for presenters: Send an outline or description of your proposed presentation.

Please include a brief biography of your background and experience as these relate to the material you wish to present.

Applications for performers: There are a limited number of openings for musicians or other performance pieces. The music or performance pieces selected will be reflective of the spiritual foundation of the festival. Please send an audition tape. Audio tapes are fine but video tapes are preferred when possible. Please include a brief biography and resume of your experience.

All materials from performers and presenters should be sent to: Carol Kerr, Program Director, Womongathering, Rt #1 Box 91 Penn Run, PA 15765-9731. Telephone queries are welcome at 412463-1318.

ASL Interpreters. ASL interpreters who are qualified for interpreting music and/or workshops are needed for both festivals. At present, all of our concerts, some films, and some workshops are sign language interpreted. At this year's Campfest our services were expanded to include a deaf communications table. It is our goal to continue to enhance the services available to the deaf community at our festivals. In order for this to happen, however, we need more interpreters willing to commit their time and talents.

Applications: Send a resume of your qualifications and experience and let us know whether your interest and expertise is in the area of music, workshops, or general communication. Deadline for the 1990 festivals is Feb. 28, 1990. Send applications to: Carol Kerr, Director, Program/Entertainment, Campfest Festivals, Rt #1, Box 91 Penn Run, PA 15765-9731. Telephone queries are welcome at 412-463-1318. Please indicate which festival(s) you are interested in.

Staff. Campfest Festivals is interested in finding a limited number of staff women who would find 14 days spent making 2 women's festivals happen a rewarding and exciting experience. There are openings in a variety of areas and dedicated women are needed to fill them. If you are interested in becoming a staff member for either or both of the 1990 festivals, send a brief resume of your experience to: Lee Glanton, Producer, Campfest Festivals, Rt #5, Box 185, Franklinville, NJ 08322. Please indicate which festival(s) you are interested in and whether you are interested in working in a particular area. Deadline for 1990 applications is Feb. 28, 1990. Telephone queries are welcome at 609694-2037.▼

It seems to me that this is a no-choice issue. Without the capacity to laugh at ourselves, even when we think we must be serious, we are lost, lost in the same old abyss of trying to be the person we're not instead of allowing ourselves to be the person we really are, always have been, and always will be.

Well, we've tried to clear up this Woody Allen thing but we haven't yet addressed the issue of the necessity of sex, first brought to our attention in 1929. Thurber and White begin their book this way, "During the past year, two factors in our civilization have been greatly overemphasized. One is aviation, the other is

sex.

It's more than a little hard to believe that people were already satiated with air shows and the proliferation of books about sex in the 1920's. I guess our

grandparents and parents really did have sex after all.

But what about us? Is sex essential to our lives now? If we don't use it, will we lose it? And to quote Hillel, a precursor of Woody Allen's, "If not now, when?"

Sex is neither an emergency nor a necessity. Without the overlay of addiction, like preparing and eating a great meal once in a while, sex is a source of pleasure and joy, of sharing and self-expression. But sometimes, just the appetizer satisfies us and we don't want a six-course dinner. Sometimes we just want dessert. And sometimes we just aren't hungry. Sometimes just having the food in the house is enough. And sometimes just a taste is what we want knowing there's more there for another time. And sometimes we just need to laugh a little.
